Review: Urban Decay Stardust Lip Glosses

posted on: 1.31.2012

I am so behind on products to review it is pure ridiculousness. Today I will be reviewing the Urban Decay Stardust Sparkling Lip Glosses, aka the Sparkliest Lip Glosses You Will Ever Gaze Upon. I swatched these at Ulta a few months ago and I was completely wow'd, unlike their Stardust eyeshadows, and I knew that I had to get one of them. So I purchased Andromeda, the peachy one, and then a few weeks later BAM! My friend Vanessa gifted me the magenta one, Glitter Rock.

These aren't overly sticky glosses, but the amount of glitter it packs is just amazing. I like to use these in the center of my lips to add insane dimension to my lips. I don't know what's in them, but they're nice and minty and tingly when applied to the lips, which I don't mind, but I know some people mind that so that is definitely something to take note of. These are also surprisingly moisturizing. Normally with glitter-packed lip glosses, you get the grittiness of the glitter left behind, but this is not the case with the Stardust lip glosses.

The packaging is really great and unique. I love how the applicator is an actual brush, and not a doe-foot applicator. You don't need a lot of product to get a nice punch, either. These lip glosses are $19 for .18 oz of product. For reference, MAC Cremesheen Lipglasses are $18.50 for .09 oz. I think the lip glosses that are most similar the the Urban Decay ones are the MAC Lustreglasses, where for $14.50, you get .17 oz of product. Honestly, I prefer the Urban Decay lip gloss over the Lustreglass.

Overall, these are really fantastic lip glosses that you should give a look next time you're at Ulta. I don't believe these are sold at Sephora, but you can get these at either Urbandecay.com, or Ulta. I've included swatches below! No lip swatches though, because no matter how often I exfoliate and condition my lips, the winter weather keeps my lips permanently chapped. Gross!

Left swatch is Andromeda, right swatch is Glitter Rock. LOOK AT ALL THE GLITTER!

Tag Time!

posted on: 1.30.2012

I am terribly sorry for my absence for most of last week! School has gotten the best of me, and I don't really see that situation improving any time soon, unfortunately. But I am going to try to keep posting regularly!

A couple of weeks ago, I was tagged by the lovely Angel, and it looks like a fun one, so here we go!

The Blogger Game:
The Rules
1. You must post the rules.
2. Post eleven fun facts about yourself on the blog post.
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post, and then create 11 new questions to ask the people you've tagged.
4. Tag 11 people and link them on your post.
5. Let them know you've tagged them!

Alrighty! So here are eleven "fun" facts about yours truly.
  1. I have a severe aversion to the smell of soggy cereal. Weirdest thing ever, I know, but I just can't do it. Which is probably why I eat my cereal dry.
  2. I used to be on a competitive dance team. Kinda like Dance Moms, except not really at all.
  3. I used to have the most horrendously crooked teeth. Like... Disgustingly bad. But 3 years and over $5,000 later, my teeth are straight for the most part! Except that one tooth on my bottom that just wants to be rebellious and is crooked. Whatever!
  4. I love writing comedy sketches. I have a bunch saved on my computer, and *maybe* one day I'll have the guts to film them and put them on Youtube. Maybe!
  5. I'm slightly obsessed with comedy, and my "idols" are Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Mindy Kaling.
  6. Even though people think I'm lying to them all the time, I am 100% Puerto Rican. I know I don't look it, but I am. So stop telling me I'm not!
  7. Don't put a piece of chocolate in front of me if you don't want it to be eaten. I'm not kidding.
  8. I have a chonga alter-ego that I do with a good friend of mine, voice and all. Refer to #4- I write sketches for my chonga alter-ego. Pero like deal with it, joo know?
  9. I am not tall. Actually, I'm exactly 5'0. Holla, shorties!
  10. Apparently I intimidate all the guys in my area with my humorousness and sarcasm. I don't know whether to take pride in that fact or cry in a corner. Hashtag single forever.
  11. I hate nightclubs. I have no desire to go to one, nor do I see the appeal in them. Too many sweaty bodys in close quarters, grossssss
Well don't I sound like a bundle of joy! Here are the questions Angel asked:
  1. What scares you?
Death. I know, how morbid of me!
  2. What is your favorite type of food?
Chocolate. No question about it. I also really love french fries.
  3. How did you name your blog?
Basically by throwing different sounds together.
  4. Your dream guy when you were a child? Was it realistic?
Oh lordie, I'm pretty sure I didn't have a "dream guy" until high school. Up until that point I thought boys had cooties. I was a late bloomer!
  5. Favorite movie of all time?
    West Side Story!!
  6. Favorite Thing About Blogging?
I've met so many wonderful and diverse people through blogging, and I wouldn't have if I wasn't blogging!
  7. Are you a Cat or Dog person?
I am suchhhh a dog person. I hate cats.
  8. You’re a Superhero what is your power?
    Melt brains
  9. What is your nickname?
Just about all my friends call me Bri or Bri Bri
  10. What is your fondest childhood Memory?
Probably all the summers I spent in New York as a child with my family
  11.  What song makes you smile just to hear it?Anything by Kimbra, especially Cameo Lover! And I'm Yours by Jason Mraz always puts me in a good mood.
Okay, so I have to tag 11 people now? Yikes, not sure if I can do that. So instead I'm going to tag whoever wants to do it! Yea, I know I'm totally taking the easy way out, sue me! Here are eleven questions for you to answer:
1. Who are three people that always make you smile?
2. What are your favorite TV shows?
3. What are your favorite movies?
4. Celebrity crush?
5. Who are your biggest inspirations?
6. What are three places you'd love to travel to?

11. If you were only allowed to use one social networking site, which would it be?

Let me know if you choose to do this tag so I can read it! :)

You Need To See This: The Artist

posted on: 1.25.2012

Two week ago whilst watching the Golden Globes, The Artist was nominated for a bunch of Golden Globes and won several of them as well. My interest was piqued. How was it that a film made in 2011was in black and white, and completely silent, with all of the modern technology that is readily available?

After trolling through Tumblr for a few minutes (*coughHOURScough*), I stumbled upon the soundtrack for the movie. After the first few notes of "George Valentin", I was hooked. Like, I went to iTunes and legally purchased the whole album and had it on a constant loop for a good two weeks. I had to see this movie, but it wasn't available in my area. The nearest theatre that was playing it was over two hours away.

Fast forward to last night, when one of my friends excitedly texted me that The Artist just started playing in our area and on Tuesday nights movie tickets are only $5. So, we obviously went to go see it. I was super excited and prayed that the movie lived up to my expectations, especially since all I had been humming all day was the soundtrack to the movie.

You guys, THIS MOVIE DOES NOT DISAPPOINT. The all-caps wasn't completely necessary, but I like to add a dramatic flair to some of my blog posts. Anyways, this movie is totally worth all the hype, and lived up to my expectations. In fact, I would even go so far to say that it exceeded my expectations! I honestly did not think I would enjoy a silent film, but I truly, truly did. It was an amazing experience.

I think I also fell in love with Jean Dujardin, the leading man of the movie. Such a handsome Frenchman! And a fantastic actor. I truly hope he wins Best Actor at the Oscars. In fact, I think that this movie deserves all the awards at the Oscars! If you are able to, please go see this movie. If you love classic musicals (especially Singin' In The Rain with Gene Kelly), you will enjoy this movie. Also, find a way to hear the soundtrack. It's marvelous! Check out the trailer below!

ps- this movie also inspired me to do a 20s-esque makeup tutorial. be on the lookout for that soon!

Beauty Wishlist Vol. 13

posted on: 1.23.2012

Happy Monday everyone! You may be wondering why I seem to be so enthusiastic on a Monday of all days, but I'm still riding a high from last night when the New York Giants beat the 49ers and are well on their way to the Superbowl in a couple of weeks against the New England Patriots. Obviously, I am a huge Giants fan, and am getting my Eli Manning football jersey ready for the Superbowl party I will be having.

But enough about football! Here is yet another edition of Beauty Wishlist!

  1. Yves Saint Laurent Glossy Stain- This is the latest and hottest product out of the YSL beauty house, and from what I can tell, these look awesome. I hate lip stains because they dry the crap out of my lips, but this formula is supposed to deliver a glossy look with the lasting power of a stain. Anyone have $32 to spare so I can try this out? ;)
  2. Benefit Sun Beam- To add to their collection of liquid highlighters and cheek/lip stains, Benefit just created Sun Beam, which is supposed to be "liquid sunshine in a bottle". Their words, not mine. Kinda cheesy, I know. Anyways, I'm curious to swatch this and see how it would look with my complexion. I'm sure this would look absolutely radiant on darker skintones though!
  3. Alterna 1 Night Highlights- THIS IS SO COOL. This product basically creates "salon-quality" highlights in your hair that are completely temporary! As in, they wash right out after you shampoo your hair. Want to play around with highlights but don't want the commitment? Then this is probably the product for you. And the price isn't completely ridiculous! I need to try this out.
Any beauty products catch your eye lately?

Talk It Out Tuesday Suggestions

posted on: 1.20.2012

The other night after I was done relentlessly blogging, I sat down and did my usual nightly stalkfest on Tumblr. And when I say "stalkfest", I mean that in the least creepy way possible. I follow several Tumblr blogs (and honestly, I have no idea why) that seem to have this preoccupation with the dumbest stuff! I swear, if I see one more picture of scantily-clad 14 year olds...

Anyways, the moral of this story is that all of this, along with my dear Youtube friend, Tildz, who films Make Up Debate videos occasionally, inspired me to start a new segment/series on my Youtube channel and here on my blog.

official logo of 'talk it out tuesdays'
I decided to name this series "Talk It Out Tuesday" and *surprise*, I'll be doing it on Tuesdays! Basically, I will be filming short videos that will be about a certain topic (and it doesn't have to be beauty related) and the purpose of these short videos is to get a discussion going on in the comments! All in good fun, of course. Nothing too ridiculously serious or political or whatever.

The reason I am writing about this today is because I need your help. I already have some topics picked out for the weeks to come (such as body image, sponsored videos/posts, giveaways, luxury brands), but I need help picking out some more topics! Like I said before, these topics don't need to be strictly beauty or fashion related. Be creative!

I think this will be a fun little addition to the Brikasia blog and Youtube channel, and something different to do! Please leave your suggestions in the comments, I'd really appreciate it! Have a great weekend everyone!

Blazers: A Fashion Essential

posted on: 1.18.2012

If there is one piece of clothing that I think every person needs to own, it's a blazer. A blazer is a piece that can transform an outfit from daytime blah to nighttime fabulous. And of course a blazer isn't just for the office anymore. No, in fact, I see plenty of women sporting blazers over vintage t-shirts and jeans for a bit of an unexpected twist.

In typical Brianna fashion, it took me 18 years to catch on that blazers just weren't for men. I had this weird vendetta against blazers, and at the moment, I have no idea why! Now I absolutely cannot live without the four (I know, it's tragic that I only have four) blazers that are currently residing in my closet.

As spring approaches, I am absolutely positive we are going to see more and more blazers being sported out on the streets. However, these blazers aren't going to be in boring black or neutral colors. I have a feeling we will be seeing more and more brightly colored blazers being sported by some fierce women over the spring. Here are three of my picks for blazers!

  1. Silence & Noise Boyfriend Blazer, Urban Outfitters, $78
  2. Contrast Button Blazer, Forever 21, $29.80
  3. Sparkle & Fade Ponte Blazer, Urban Outfitters, $59
I want #1 in all the colors available. Especially that bright pink. It belongs in my closet!

How do you feel about blazers?

Golden Globes 2012 Fashion Recap!

posted on: 1.17.2012

Alright ladies and gentlemen! I know this is a day late, but I wanted to give you all a break from the Golden Globes coverage that you were bombarded with yesterday. Now I'm going to warn you: these are my opinions on the fashion choices made, not the makeup. Honestly, red carpet makeup tends to bore me because it all looks the same. I know it isn't, but I don't feel like wasting my breath on it. Since this is going to be a rather extensive breakdown, I decided to be kind and have my complete breakdown after the jump! (ps how freaking adorable was Uggie the dog from 'The Artist'? He totally deserved his own Golden Globe!)

Girl Crush Time: Aubrey Plaza

posted on: 1.12.2012

If you are not an avid watcher of the TV show Parks & Recreation, what are you doing with your life?? The last three seasons are on Netflix. Stop what you are doing (jk, wait till after reading this blog post) and watch it. Now. Because of Parks & Rec, I discovered I have a huuuuge girl crush on Aubrey Plaza, who plays April Ludgate.

Aubrey has such a wonderful sense of style, that I just have to write up an "Aubrey Plaza Appreciation Post". Besides her style, I'm such a huge fan of her deadpan comedy style, and although a bunch of people don't like this quality about her, I also love how monotone her voice is. She's also half-Puerto Rican, and for whatever reason, when I find out a famous person has any Puerto Rican in them, I instantly feel a connection with them. Which is weird, because it's not like I would go to Puerto Rico and instantly feel a connection with every Rican I pass. But I digress!

So besides her being hilariously awesome, her fashion sense is spot on. I literally want everything in her closet. Everything she wears is understated, but completely spot-on. Aubrey knows what flatters her the most, and she brings it every time she hits the red carpet.

The thing about Aubrey is that she isn't afraid to go out of her comfort zone when it comes to clothes. For example, at the Scott Pilgrim movie premiere (she played Julie Powers), she donned that gorgeous frock that showed plenty of skin, which is something fans weren't used to seeing her wear. But she rocked it anyways, and it totally helps that she has an amazing body (I tried making this last statement not sound creepy, but it was going to sound creepy anyways, so I'm sorry, okayyy?).
And can I just tell you how much I loved her dress that she wore to the Emmy's? HOLY $@#! I almost died when I saw that dress. And her hair! Her makeup! Everything about this look was so beautiful and so elegant. I honestly can't believe so many people overlooked her on the red carpet. She's insanely gorgeous, and insanely underrated.

I would continue with this Aubrey Plaza lovefest, however, I think you've all had enough of my girl crushiness. I wouldn't necessarily declare Aubrey as a style icon quite yet, but I will say that she does influence my own sense of style, and I am hoping to see a lot more of her on the red carpets in the future.

Review: BareMinerals READY Eyeshadow 2.0

posted on: 1.10.2012

I know you guys, I can't believe I'm actually typing up a review either. Bare Minerals came out with a new line of pressed eyeshadows a couple of months ago, and I have been dying to try them out. Last month, I finally caved and bought one for myself, and let me just tell you this: these eyeshadows definitely live up to the hype. These are so soft and creamy and well pigmented, and you don't even need a primer to make these shadows stick around.

The palette I purchased was in "The Epiphany". Before I go any further, can we just take a moment to discuss how much fun that name is? I feel so inspired to put these eyeshadows on my eyelids. The Epiphany. God, that name makes me want to put these eyeshadows on right this very second. All joking aside, besides the palette name, each eyeshadow has its own individual name. The shadow on the left is named "A-Ha" and the one on the right is "Foreshadow". Food for thought: Who comes up with these names? I want their job!

I tried my hardest to make these photos of the eyeshadows as true to life as possible. Nobody tells you how difficult that is! As you can see, "A-Ha" is a beautiful bronzey-taupe color, which is a beautiful color on its on. And so creamy, it's ridiculous. I guess that's where the name comes from. When you apply it, you go "A-Ha!" in disbelief at how gorgeous this color is. I'm being overdramatic. This shade is definitely frosty, and I would say it is a bit similar to MAC Woodwinked shadow, but a lot less orange.

"Foreshadow", on the other hand, is an almost-matte creamy reddish brown. When you see it in person, it looks completely matte, but the photographs show otherwise. However, the sparkle in the shadow definitely does not translate once swatched and applied.

These eyeshadows apply evenly and nicely. A bit pricey (this duo was $20) for .1 oz of product. They are easily blendable and just all-around really nice. You can read Temptalia's review of this duo here. I completely recommend these eyeshadows for any that are interested.

Have you tried any of the Bare Minerals pressed eyeshadows?

Beauty Wishlist Vol. 12

posted on: 1.09.2012

It has been a hot minute since I've done one of these! I actually have been trying to be good and avoid Sephora.com so I'm not tempted to buy something I don't need, but I decided it is my moral duty as a beauty blogger to comb through the website for the millionth time to find some products that I could possibly desire. And I was successful!

  1. Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick SPF 15- Because I am so WOW'd by their mascara, naturally, the next item on my YSL wishlist is one of their lipsticks, which people are raving about. I lost my signature lipstick from MAC, Chatterbox, so I'm on the hunt for a newer, better shade. I have never had it in me to spend $34 on a lipstick, but the shade Peach Passion is screaming my name.
  2. Tarina Tarantino Eye Dream Hyperliner- These eyeliners seem to be the edgy, artsy younger sister of the Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliners and the Makeup Forever Aqua Liners. Temptalia herself has crowned these eyeliners the best of 2011. These are two dollars cheaper than Urban Decay and Makeup Forever, and it essentially boasts the same qualities. Waterproof and long lasting? Count me in!
  3. Smashbox Be Legend Lipstick- There is really no good reason for me wanting this lipstick. I just really want to try something from Smashbox, ya know?
  4. Chanel Illusion D'Ombre Eyeshadow- At first, it seemed silly to spend $36 on a cream eyeshadow, but honestly, if I'm willing to spend $34 on a YSL lipstick, how much different is that from a $36 eyeshadow? Right? Sometimes, my logic scares me.
Now tell me, my lovely readers, what products have caught your eye lately?

Peter Pan Collars: Hot or Not?

posted on: 1.06.2012

Lately I've noticed a huge trend in something I used to personally loathe: peter pan collars. The peter pan collar got its namesake from the Disney classic, Peter Pan. It is very popular with young children and *obviously* now women. The interesting thing about the classic peter pan collar is how modest the neckline is, compared to the necklines we're used to seeing nowadays, which typically involves a whole lot of cleavage.

Some people like peter pan collars, others do not. Personally, this trend has definitely grown on me and I am now coveting a blouse or dress with a peter pan collar. I've narrowed down four of my personal favorites.

  1. Vero Moda Blouse with Peter Pan Collar from ASOS, $36
  2. Frenchi Peter Pan Collar Blouse from Nordstrom, $44
  3. Lucca Couture Lace-Collar Blouse from Urban Outfitters, $59
  4. Violet Recital Dress from Modcloth.com, $58
I personally am seriously in clothing-love with the Lucca Couture blouse. I might have to splurge on that one.

How do you feel about the peter pan collar trend?

My Swap With Vanessa! (@makebelievemua)

posted on: 1.03.2012

This post is seriously a long time in the making. Back in early December (or was it late November? I don't know my dates anymore), me and my friend Vanessa, whom I met at IMATS this past April, decided to do a swap! It was my first swap, so of course I agreed to do it! I was super excited to shop for Vanessa. She's gorgeous and sometimes I think we may be the same person. You can check out her blog post on what I got her right HERE. She also has a really great Youtube channel as well.

Anyways, I received her package December 24th. The same day I left for my cruise. Like, we were literally heading out the door when the mailman knocked on our door with the package. So I savagely ripped it open and was so excited to see what was inside! I was even more excited when I saw what was inside the package.

I don't even know where to begin! Well, as you can see in the picture, she got me two Milani blushes and a Milani nail polish, all of which I love. I've heard great things about Milani blushes, but never got around to purchasing them. And let me just tell you... These blushes are crazy pigmented! I couldn't believe how pigmented these blushes were. Don't worry, I will be posting swatches here on the blog very soon.

She also got me an Urban Decay Stardust lip gloss, which I am also obsessed with! I actually have one in a lighter shade, and almost got this shade. These lip glosses are phenomenal! Swatches of these glosses are coming soon too.

Then she got me something I totally was not expecting. The Yves Saint Laurent Shocking Mascara! Holy crap when I saw this in the box, I almost passed out. Almost. I was so excited! The packaging is so fancy and regal and gold and pretty, and the mascara definitely does not disappoint. I actually wore this mascara all throughout my cruise, and people kept asking me if I was wearing false lashes. It's that good.

Then she also got me this beautiful black quilted purse. I swear, it is like Vanessa knows my thoughts because I have been searching for a new purse after my last purse's strap broke! This is my new favorite bag, and anyone who knows me knows how much I love my crossbody bags. This was the perfect gift!

And last, but certainly not least, is that freaking AMAZING calendar Vanessa custom made for me. This is truly one of the most thoughtful and amazing gifts I have ever received. The calendar is so beautiful, and she incorporated some of my makeup looks into it, along with some inspiring makeup pictures.

This whole swap experience was such a wonderful experience. I had so much fun shopping for Vanessa, and I absolutely loved everything she got me. Thank you so much Vanessa! Swatches & reviews on these products coming soon!

New Year & New Resolutions

posted on: 1.02.2012

I am one of those people who are still refusing to acknowledge the fact that it is, indeed, 2012. How quickly 2011 went by! I had both the best time and worst time in 2011. It was a crazy roller coaster ride! Definitely one of the highlights of 2011 was travelling to New York to go to IMATS in April, definitely in my top 5 moments of 2011! Another highlight was starting this blog, which I am so happy I did! In case you didn't realize, I completely redid Brikasia's layout, AND I have a new URL! The Brikasia blog's new home is now officially www.brikasia.com. BRIKASIA HAS ITS OWN DOMAIN! I did this in the last few days of 2011, and it was a major accomplishment for me. I am so excited to see where my blog goes!

Now after that brief reminiscing of 2011, it is time to look forward to 2012. Here are some of my new years resolutions for my blog:

  1. Increase traffic on this blog and gain a greater audience.
  2. Post more original and unique content.
  3. Blog consistently at least 4 times a week.
  4. Upload videos more regularly, at least 1-2 times a week!
  5. Continue to interact more regularly on beauty forums to establish new friendships and maintain current friendships.
I think those are the five most important resolutions for the Brikasia blog. Here are some of my personal resolutions (which somehow still have ties to my blog- lol go figure.) :
  1. Be more fashion forward and adventurous- wear things I normally wouldn't.
  2. Tone up! Losing weight isn't really a priority for me since I'm already naturally petite, but I need to tone up and get buff!
  3. Eat healthier. I already eat fairly well, until it comes to dessert. Seriously, I can and will eat anything with chocolate. Chocolate is my downfall!
  4. Stop impulse buying. Before purchasing anything, I will question myself whether the product is a necessary item, or just something I "want". Will I ever use this item? Do I have something similar to the item? Do I really need this item?
Those are just a few of my personal resolutions. I have more, but I would like to keep those strictly in my head. What are your new years resolutions? I would love to hear about them and be inspired!
