10 Steps for the Perfect 90s-Inspired Grunge Makeup

Whether you like it or not, the 90s grunge trend is back in full force. I kind of wish I was older during the 90s (I was born in '92) because I am legitimately curious as to whether I would've been a grunge kinda gal or a brightly-colored Fresh Prince kinda gal. All irrelevance to the side, I have gotten some requests to do a grunge-inspired makeup tutorial. This look can be as tame or as badass as you want it to be. And it's super easy! It's meant to be perfectly imperfect, so any smudges or mistakes you make will just add to the grunginess. Read on for the full tutorial!

  1. Apply a sparkly, gray eyeliner as a base. I'm using Stila Smudge Stick in Lionfish. Use this to outline the shape of your eyeshadow.
  2. Blend with a fluffy brush.
  3. Using the Urban Decay Vice 2 Palette, take Poison and apply over your base. You can use any black eyeshadow for this.
  4. Blend the edges.
  5. Next I took a combination of Rewind and Habit eyeshadows from the Vice 2 palette, and blended it into the crease as a transition color. You can use any medium brown color for this.
  6. Using a metallic silver eyeshadow, apply it to the inner corner of the eye. I'm using Shellshock from the Vice 2 palette.
  7. Take a black pencil eyeliner and line your eyes and waterline. I'm using the Urban Decay Perversion 24/7 Glide On Pencil.
  8. Smudge the black eyeliner out.
  9. Apply mascara.
  10. Then, taking your mascara brush, apply the leftover mascara haphazardly around the eye area for a sexy/messy look. This is obviously an optional step. If you just want a smoky eye, skip this step!
And voila! You have yourself a super easy grungy makeup look. To finish it off, I just contoured my face and applied a lip color. For a lip color, you can go super vamp, or nudey-pink. Here's what both looked like:

I ultimately chose going with the nude/pink color, but I totally love this look with the vampy lipstick too. It just depends on how bold you're feeling! Which way do you prefer?
