- A plain makeup bag/pouch (we found ours at Target for $1. Similar item here)
- Fabric paint
- Freezer paper
- X-Acto knife
- Paint sponge/brush
- Optional: yarn for pom-pom accent
Trace out whatever you want (whether it be a saying, phrase, your name, a picture, etc) on a piece of freezer paper. You want the shiny side facing down. Using an X-Acto knife, cut out your design. It should look like this:
Place your stencil over your bag, shiny side down. Using an iron on low heat, carefully place the iron on your stencil. With the heat from the iron, the freezer paper acts like a sticker and will stick to the fabric of the bag, making it easy to paint in your stencil.
Using a paint brush or paint sponge, stipple paint over your stencil, as shown above.
After stippling the paint, carefully peel off the freezer paper to reveal your painted design. At this stage, you can start decorating or adding whatever else to your bag. We opted to add dots to frame our phrase.
And that's it! The most time consuming part is cutting out your stencil. For an additional touch, we made our own yarn pom-poms to attach to the zipper of our pouch (easy tutorial on how to DIY a yarn pom pom can be found here). Just let the paint dry, and it is ready to be used! Lauren was fortunate enough to snag our bags in the $1 bin at Target. You can probably find something very similar at your local craft store, or if you're extra crafty, you can probably sew one up!
