DIY Stenciled Makeup Bag

DIY Stenciled Makeup Bag

posted on: 11.06.2013

While it feels like it's been AGES since I've posted a new DIY tutorial (the last time was at the end of August!), I am back with a new DIY tutorial, in collaboration with my dearest friend Lauren. For this tutorial, we are showing you how to create a unique stencil so you can take a drab makeup bag to fab! Here are the materials you will need:
STEP ONE.
Trace out whatever you want (whether it be a saying, phrase, your name, a picture, etc) on a piece of freezer paper. You want the shiny side facing down. Using an X-Acto knife, cut out your design. It should look like this:

STEP TWO.
Place your stencil over your bag, shiny side down. Using an iron on low heat, carefully place the iron on your stencil. With the heat from the iron, the freezer paper acts like a sticker and will stick to the fabric of the bag, making it easy to paint in your stencil.
STEP THREE.
Using a paint brush or paint sponge, stipple paint over your stencil, as shown above.

STEP FOUR.
After stippling the paint, carefully peel off the freezer paper to reveal your painted design. At this stage, you can start decorating or adding whatever else to your bag. We opted to add dots to frame our phrase.
And that's it! The most time consuming part is cutting out your stencil. For an additional touch, we made our own yarn pom-poms to attach to the zipper of our pouch (easy tutorial on how to DIY a yarn pom pom can be found here). Just let the paint dry, and it is ready to be used! Lauren was fortunate enough to snag our bags in the $1 bin at Target. You can probably find something very similar at your local craft store, or if you're extra crafty, you can probably sew one up!
Happy crafting!

  1. Very cool! I just thought it'd be really awesome if every blogger had one of these and their blog name scrolled across. So cute and personal :) I may try this over the holiday breaks!
