Mascara Madness

Mascara Madness

Over the past few months, I've been trying out different mascaras (Lash Sleeve, Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, Ellis Faas Mascara, No. 7 Extreme Length Mascara) to see what I liked, what I didn't, and then trying to decide whether or not these mascaras warranted a review or not. In the end, I decided to just do a "mascara madness" post, where I briefly review some of the mascaras I've been using lately. I'll probably do this more often, but I am not making any promises because, well, I tend not to try out new mascaras anymore.

I feel like I should preface this post by saying I'm not a huge mascara person. Like, yea, I wear it, but I don't really care too much about volumizing and plumping and injecting and whatever else they promise nowadays in my mascara. I feel like I tend to prefer lengthening mascaras above all else, but really: I don't care! So, with that in mind, here is my take on four different mascaras.

Mascara One: Lash Sleeve
The Lash Sleeve mascara ($15) is a water-based mascara that it supposed to grab hold of each individual lash to create a 360 degree sleeve. The result should be plump, lush, long lashes that are immune to smearing and water.  It won't flake off during the day, and contains lash benefiting ingredients such as squalane, candelilla wax, and glycerol.

I would definitely say that this is a water-immune mascara. If I'm going to the beach or have an extraordinarily long day of practicing my Beyonce choreography (because really, who wouldn't dedicate a full day of Beyonce dance practice?!), this is the mascara I turn to. It is definitely a lengthening mascara, and isn't very volumizing. And, best of all, it won't clump and does not flake off. Win! The wand is a bit big, so if you're a bit clumsy like me, you might get some on your lid. You will need a waterproof makeup remover to remove it... So be careful with this mascara!

Mascara Two: Too Faced "Better Than Sex" Mascara
The Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara ($23) is a very black and very intense mascara. It is a volumizing mascara that features an hourglass-shaped mascara wand. The hype over this mascara on the blogosphere is pretttty huge, so naturally I had to go to Ulta and pick it up to see what the fuss was.

Long story short: not my favorite. It definitely amps up the lashes, which would be just dandy, but this mascara flakes and smears on me like crazy. Like, I can't laugh too hard because it will smear and give me raccoon eyes. And looking like a Stepford wife is ~not~ something I enjoy looking like. I also found that it has a tendency to clump. The wand is pretty large, and I found it to be kinda messy. Like, even being careful I somehow managed to smudge it all over my lower lashline. Basically, this mascara was a huge letdown.

Mascara Three: Ellis Faas Mascara
The Ellis Faas Mascara ($34) is a creamy mascara that coats, lengthens and separates each individual lash. The wand is nice and thin, and allows for more precision.

This is a nice mascara, although I'm not sure if it completely warrants the $34 price tag that goes along with it. I do find that when I remove the wand from the packaging, there is an excessive amount of product on the wand. Before applying, definitely wipe off the excess product on the rim of the product, or else you will have a clumpy mess on your hands. It is a lengthening mascara and defines my lashes well, but isn't dramatic. I would say that this is a good daytime mascara. No real complaints here, aside from the ridiculous price tag.

Mascara Four: No. 7 Extreme Length Mascara
The No. 7 Extreme Length Mascara ($7.99) defines, lengthens, and separates lashes, and contains Pro-Vitamin B5 which works to condition and moisturize eyelashes. The mascara wand is flexible and features slim rubber bristles to help with length and definition. This mascara is also labeled as being hypo-allergenic.

This is probably my favorite mascara I've tried in a very long time. I love that it is completely affordable, and it really lengthens my lashes. It doesn't clump and flake off during the day, and is perfect for my everyday routine. It isn't dramatic, so I wouldn't wear this on a night out. The color I have is in Brown/Black. I never really liked brown/black mascaras, but this mascara definitely changed my mind about that. Like I said... perfect for everyday!

Have you ever tried any of these mascara? I would love to hear your experiences! Also, have you tried any new mascaras lately that you are loving? I'm looking for a good, dramatic mascara for night!

  1. I'm really liking the looks of that No7 Mascara! My favorite everyday mascara's been elf's 3-in-1 mascara. It's doesn't do too much for volume, but it's great at lengthening and curling lashes. Also, it's only $3 and what's not to like about that?
I recently got a sample of Laura Mercier Full Blown Volume Lash and liked it a lot more than I thought I would! It's definitely my go-to for when I want a little more drama to my lashes.

    1. Oooh I'm gonna have to check out the Laura Mercier mascara! And yes, definitely try the No7 mascara, it is wonderful!
