How Do YOU Apply Your Foundation?

6.13.2014

nars sheer glow foundation, foundation brush, beauty blender, buffing brush, make up for ever mat velvet plus, urban decay naked skin foundation, real techniques brushes
A question I'm asked a lot as a makeup artist is how I like to apply my foundation. I tend to tell people that I like using a buffing brush, but I recently started thinking about it (because I have an extraordinary amount of time on my hands, clearly) and realized that I'm a LIAR! Dramatics aside, I have realized that it totally depends on the foundation. I use 4-5 different foundations on a regular basis, and depending on the formulation of the foundation, I will use different tools for application.

For example, I will use a Real Techniques Buffing Brush with the NARS Sheer Glow foundation. For the Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + foundation, I'll just use my fingers. For the Graftobian HD cream foundations I use in my makeup kit, I use both a foundation brush and my trusty Beauty Blender. It all just depends! So that piqued my interest and leads me to ask you... How do you like to apply your foundation? Any new tips/tricks you'd like to share?

  1. Like you, I switch up my application depending on the foundation. For my Ben Nye Sheer HD foundations I use in my makeup kit, I use the Real Techniques buffing brush as well as the Real Techniques Complexion Sponge. For my Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua I apply with my fingers, and for my Loreal Lumi foundation I use the Elf stippling brush and blend it out with the RT complexion sponge.

    1. Ooh how do you like the RT Complexion Sponge? I wonder how it compares to the Beauty Blender sponge.

  2. It also depends! I mostly prefer to use my fingers on light coverage ones but when they're medium to full coverage I prefer to use a brush or sponge :) xx

    1. Excellent point! I think I'm the opposite though. I feel like I use brushes for light coverage ones but my fingers for more full coverage. Eh, idk lol.

  3. I agree, it all depends on the type of foundation you're using. I usually work with the Real Technique's Expert Face Brush, but for my more "watery" foundations I use a more paint-brush style brush (the Sephora Pro Collection #47).

    1. Yep. I've been finding myself using my fingers more, perhaps because I'm lazy LOL.
