Do You Get Treated Differently With No Makeup On?

posted on: 10.27.2014

I'm going to be totally real here: I rarely leave the house without any makeup on. My bare minimum is at least some concealer on my face and my brows filled in. I have acne and my skin is always blotchy, so I try to not look like a sickly person on a regular basis. However, there are some days where I just don't give a damn and will run to Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts for a snack or coffee without a stitch of makeup on and you guys- people are NOT as nice. That sounds so vain on my part, but I've noticed when I'm not exactly at my most presentable, people do not go out of their way to be friendly to me. And when I'm looking my best, people are extra nice to me. WHY?!

So I did a lil' experiment. I went to the Starbucks drive-thru without a stitch of makeup on, and the guy at the window wasn't exactly warm and fuzzy towards me. I made sure I was extra friendly and tipped extra well. I mean, hey, we all have our bad days, and my barista could have been having a rough morning. After getting my drink, I went home, threw some makeup on, and went back to the same Starbucks drive-thru and ordered another drink. And lo and behold, the same barista was at the window, and he was- dare I say- flirtatious with me! A very charming barista indeed, and apparently all it took was a winged liner and bold lip to make him feel warmer towards me.

Now, that's not to say that people are extra mean to me whenever I don't have makeup on. That's not true, either! It's just sometimes I've noticed that people don't treat me as well when I'm looking terrible. But maybe I'm just thinking too much into it. And this is all very much a generalization of people's reaction towards me. But I do believe that a lot of people are superficial and subconsciously treat good looking people better than average looking people. What do you think? Do you get treated differently with no makeup on?

  1. Nice think-piece! It's very sad that you ha to wear makeup for him to be polite.

  2. In most cases it's definitely true, with the makeup on you get friendlier reactions. Though, I've also been told by guys and girls that when I wear less makeup or no makeup I come off more approachable. I think it really just depends on the person, their preferences and their mood.

  3. Hmm, I've never really thought about it. When I go out without makeup, I'm normally distracted/in a rush, so I'm too busy to pay attention if people are being rude or not, ha! I'll have to pay attention next time!

  4. I'd say this is definitely true for me. On the weekends, if I'm not doing anything major, I don't wear makeup, I'll go to the grocery store, Starbucks, etc. bare faced and while people aren't out-and-out rude, they just don't pay enough attention and act like I'm invisible. If I go in with my normal makeup on they are nicer and pay more attention and if I go in with a bolder lip on, people are noticeably much, much nicer! Sad but true.

  5. Very interesting post. I have days when I don´t wear any makeup but I haven´t noticed people treat me differently, but what I have noticed that with my makeup on I myself feel much more confident.

  6. I love thinking about this type of stuff, it's like that way with guys with breads. My brother was that way when he was a baby, with my aunt he'd be all hey there with her with makeup on and without he'd be MOMMY!!! scary lady!!!

  7. Oh yes. I love this post!! People aren't directly rude to me but God forbid I run into Ulta sans makeup and the associates follow me around like I'm going to steal something. I will go in with a full face and they're complimenting me and asking me details.

  10. Not just w/ makeup but overall, people treat you differently when you look or dress decently. I know it sounds biased but it's a reality that bites. Growing up, my grandma used to tell me to look presentable at all times so it's something ingrained in me now that I'm a lot older.

  11. Yes, I absolutely do. I have been told I look at least 5 years younger without makeup... so people treat me like I'm younger.

  12. I would never leave the house without make up so I have no idea, but I would feel less confident if I did and that probably reflects on others..

  13. I leave the house without makeup all the time especially to run errands, although I try to have my hair semi decent. For me my hair makes more of a changge.
